1. Christ, whose glory fills the skies,
Christ, the true, the only light,
Sun of Righteousness, arise,
triumph o'er the shades of night;
Dayspring from on high, be near;
Daystar, in my heart appear.
2. Dark and cheerless is the morn
unaccompanied by thee;
joyless is the day's return,
till thy mercy's beams I see;
till they inward light impart,
cheer my eyes and warm my heart.
3. Visit then this soul of mine;
pierce the gloom of sin and grief;
fill me, Radiancy divine,
scatter all my unbelief;
more and more thyself display,
shining to the perfect day.

Story of the hymn Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Sky
Author: Charles Wesley (1707–1788)
Date: Written in 1739
Original title: "Hymn for Ascension Day"
"Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Sky" was written by Charles Wesley as a hymn specifically for Ascension Day, the Christian feast celebrating Christ’s return to heaven forty days after the Resurrection.
It first appeared in Wesley’s 1739 collection "Hymns and Sacred Poems", a foundational work of early Methodism.
The hymn is structured as a morning hymn, using sunrise imagery to express spiritual illumination. Wesley draws on biblical metaphors of light, dawn, and rising glory, portraying Christ as the
"Sun of Righteousness" from Malachi 4:2 who rises to dispel darkness, sin, and spiritual blindness.
Rather than focusing only on the historical event of the Ascension, Wesley transforms it into a personal prayer. The singer asks Christ to rise in the heart just as the sun rises in the sky.
The hymn became widely used not only for Ascension Day, but also for morning worship, the Easter season, and general services focused on light, resurrection, and spiritual awakening.
