1. Because thou hast said: "Do this for my sake," the mystical bread we gladly partake; we thirst for the Spirit that flows from above, and long to inherit thy fullness of love.

2. 'Tis here we look up and grasp at thy mind, 'tis here that we hope thine image to find; the means of bestowing thy gifts we embrace; but all things are owing to Jesus' grace.

Reflection

Charles Wesley's hymn begins with a simple yet profound reason for approaching the Lord's Table: "Because Thou hast said." Not because we feel worthy. Not because we've earned it. But because Christ Himself invited us.

This hymn reminds us that obedience to Jesus is not rooted in fear or ritual-it's rooted in love and trust. When He says, "Do this," He's not issuing a cold command. He's offering a sacred moment of connection, a renewal of grace, a reminder of His sacrifice.

Wesley's words also point us toward longing: "We thirst for the Spirit that flows from above." Communion is not just remembrance-it's a place of spiritual hunger and divine filling. We come not only to recall the cross, but to receive the Spirit afresh.

And finally, the hymn closes with humility: "All things are owing to Jesus' grace." Even our ability to come, to believe, to receive-none of it is ours by merit. It's all grace.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I come to Your table not because I am worthy, but because You have said, "Come." Let this bread and cup remind me of Your love, renew my spirit, and deepen my trust. May I never forget that all I have is grace. Amen.
